Edible bananas originated in the Indo-Malaysian region reaching to northern Australia. Bananas are grown in every humid tropical region and constitutes the 4th largest fruit crop of the world. Bananas will grow in most soils, but to thrive, they should be planted in a rich, well-drained soil. The best possible location would be above an abandoned compost heap. The common names of banana are Banana, Bananier Nain, Canbur, Curro and Plantain .
In Tamilnadu, these bananas occupies a main place in the offerings to God.

The best and tasiest variety grown in Kerala are the Nendran Bananas. It is otherwise known as "Ethakai". This variety requires a very good sunlight and a rich irrigation. In the ripened stage these bananas would be fo golden yellow colour with red patched on it. The bananas are used for dual purpose as dessert and for cooking. The fruit also is the best preparation for the banana chips.
